Rites Planned for Textbook Publisher Richard D. Irwin
Funeral services for Richard D. Irwin, founder of the Illinois-based textbook-publishing house that bears his name, will be conducted Thursday at Flossmoor Community Church in Flossmoor, Ill.
Irwin, 85, died of pneumonia Sunday at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey, Ill.
Starting the company on a shoestring in 1933, Irwin built the firm into one of the largest publishers of business and economic texts in the nation.
In 1975, he sold the firm to Dow Jones & Co., retiring a few years later as Irwin’s chairman emeritus to pursue local philanthropic interests. Last year, Dow Jones sold the company to Times Mirror Co.
