Surprise Check for Hazardous Loads

Share

A surprise inspection Tuesday of trucks hauling hazardous materials and wastes found a total of 21 violations, most involving improper labeling of the dangerous loads, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP and inspectors from the state Department of Health set up the surprise checkpoint on Alameda Street near Pine Avenue in Compton, across the street from Demenno-Kerdoon, a firm that stores and treats hazardous materials and waste.

Nine of the 27 trucks inspected were temporarily taken out of service to repair violations of regulations covering the shipping of hazardous waste and materials, CHP Officer Gary Hanson said. Investigators believe that between 75 and 100 trucks enter the company on a normal day, but only 27 appeared during the 4 1/2-hour inspection period, CHP Sgt. Mike Brey said.
