LOS ALAMITOS : Wish List for Federal Funds Is Approved

Share

The City Council has approved seven community development projects totaling $395,000 to be included in the county’s block grant application for federal funding.

As a city with a population less than 50,000, Los Alamitos participates with other small cities in the Urban County Community Development Block Grant application put together by the county. Last year the city received $115,000 for four local projects from the Housing and Urban Development department.

For consideration, the projects for which funds are being requested must be in each community’s “target area”--in this case Old Town West, Old Town East, Apartment Row and Carrier Row. All of the neighborhoods are in the mid-city region north of the Armed Forces Reserve Center.

The projects approved by the council Monday include home improvements throughout the target area, two alley reconstructions, street improvements on Howard Avenue and roadways in Apartment Row, drainage improvements on Farquhar Avenue and repairs at the Los Alamitos Youth Center.

“We feel the project with the highest priority is the $80,000 requested for home improvements in the various neighborhoods,” city planner Larry Emerson said at the meeting. “There is currently a significant waiting list for home improvements, and we feel this money would reduce that list a great deal, if not get rid of it altogether.”

HUD will consider the application during its fiscal 1990-91 budget sessions in the spring.
