Britain’s national newspapers, from staid heavyweights to racy tabloids, published a code of conduct aimed at improving their tarnished image and heading off government controls on reporting. Editors, stung by accusations they invade privacy and intrude on grief, agreed on the five-point voluntary code along with an internal policing system.
