WORLD : Soviets Assail Reunification Talk
The Soviet Union today condemned a call by West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl for a federation of East and West Germany, accusing him of trying to stir up East German nationalism.
“We can see clearly an attempt to push the recently started process of renovation in (East Germany) in a nationalist direction, to prescribe the route and meaning of reform,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yuri Gremitskikh said.
He said Kohl had acted without considering the feelings of other European countries, especially East Germany, noting that East Berlin’s leaders had said reunification was not on their political agenda.
