WEST BERLIN — More than 10 million East Germans have crossed the border to West Germany since the Nov. 9 opening of the Berlin Wall and the lifting of travel restrictions, the West German Interior Ministry said Saturday.
The statement came as almost half a million East Germans, taking advantage of their newly won freedom to travel, mingled with Christmas shoppers in West Berlin and other cities in West Germany.
Several hundred East Germans traveled directly to West Berlin on board two railroad trains. The Interior Ministry said in a statement that 468,800 East Germans traveled to West Germany on Saturday morning alone.
