Evans’Victory String Ends at 27

Olympian Janet Evans ran her unbeaten streak to 27 consecutive races before seeing it end Sunday night at the U.S. Open swimming meet in Orlando, Fla.

Evans, of Placentia, cruised to a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle in 4 minutes, 12.13 seconds, but then had to settle for second place in the 200-meter backstroke to Janie Wagstaff of Mission Hills, Kan., who won that race in 2:15.33.

Evans last lost a race in August, 1987 at the Pan Pacific meet in Brisbane, Australia.

She won Olympic gold medals in the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 400 individual medley at Seoul.
