A bomb planted by Irish Republican Army commandos exploded in a shopping center in the garrison town of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, today, injuring 19 people, three seriously, and destroying several shops and businesses.

Thousands of shoppers were in the town when the 500-pound bomb exploded at 11 a.m., police said.

A Royal Ulster Constabulary spokesman said the bomb exploded while police were trying to evacuate the center of Lisburn, 10 miles west of Belfast, following a bomb warning by the IRA.

Most of the injured were treated for minor wounds and shock, police said.

Investigators said the bomb, which was attached to a timing device, was in a stolen van in Lisburn’s market square. Shops and businesses sustained extensive damage, and the force of the blast shattered windows in homes and shops up to a half-mile away, police said.
