East Europe Chosen as Top Story of 1989

Historic change in Eastern Europe, termed the “flowering of perestroika ,” was selected as the top news story of 1989 by the editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The editors, based in London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Sydney, Istanbul and Chicago, cited a “cascade of changes” in the East Bloc as the basis for their decision.
