QUESTION: I have some spackle left over from a project I did about six months ago. I now have a similar job to do, but it is outdoors. The first job was on the inside of the house. Is it all right to use it?

ANSWER: Ordinary spackle is not waterproof and should not be used outdoors. However, there is a special type of spackle that can be used both inside and outside. Check the instructions on the container and see what it says about using the product outdoors.

Outline Tool Shape on Workshop Pegboard

Q: I intend to set up a workshop in my basement. Can I use Pegboard for hanging the tools?

A: Yes. Be sure to attach the Pegboard to furring strips or something similar so it would be away from the wall a bit and thus permit the tools to be hung properly. Here’s another tip. Each time you place a new tool on one of the pegboard hooks, use a marking pen to outline the shape of the tool. In that way, you will always know where everything belongs.

Shrubbery Should Be Cut to Avoid Mildew

Q: There is a considerable amount of mildew on the siding at the bottom of one side of our house. The mildew is only on the bottom pieces of wood. What could be causing this, especially since it is only in this one spot?

A: Mildew sometimes occurs only at the bottom of a house or where the siding meets the concrete foundation or masonry. Usually it is because part of the house is shaded by shrubbery. When rain takes place, the shrubbery keeps the wood wet, which fosters mildew.

The shrubbery also blocks out the sun. Do something about eliminating the shrubbery or, at the very least, trimming it so the sun’s rays can get through. When mildew occurs, it is because of dampness, warmth, lack of ventilation, dirt and a lack of light.
