Treasury Considers Issuing 40-Year Bonds: The Treasury Department is considering new 40-year bonds as part of its government financing operations, Michael Basham, deputy assistant secretary for federal finance, said. Thirty-year bonds are the longest-term debt instruments sold by the Treasury to finance the government. Basham said suggestions for the longer debt instrument came from the bond market and added, “the burden of proof (for demand of a 40-year bond) is on the proposer.”
