Elliot Uzelac was fired as Navy’s head football coach today, just two days after his Midshipmen upset Army 19-17.

Athletic Director Jack Lengyel said the Naval Academy Athletic Assn. will buy out the final year of Uzelac’s four-year contract.

“Our football program under Coach Uzelac has not progressed to the degree of competitiveness necessary to achieve the success we believe can be accomplished at the Naval Academy. Therefore, it is with sincere regret that Coach Uelac has been released,” Lengyel said in a prepared statement.

The Naval Academy won just eight games and lost 25 during the three years since Uzelac took over as head coach. He had lost two games to Army before pulling off the upset on Saturday.
