Alberto Tomba of Italy, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, broke his left collarbone in a fall at Val d’ Isere, France, in the first super-giant slalom of the men’s World Cup season. Niklas Henning of Sweden won the event.

Starting 13th, Tomba fell about 40 seconds into his run and began somersaulting. He got up slowly and complained of pain in his left shoulder.

He was flown to Bologna, Italy, where X-rays determined he had a fracture in the left collarbone, Dr. Marco Manfrini said. Paolo Comellini, Tomba’s business manager, said he should be able to resume skiing carefully in about three weeks.
