NATION IN BRIEF : EAST, MIDWEST : Wintry Storm Brings Snow and Frigid Air

A cold front gripped the East and Midwest, carrying wind chills of 50 below zero to North Dakota and 37 below zero in South Dakota and bringing snow from New York to Michigan and into Tennessee and Kentucky. Farther west, snow spread over the southern Rockies and southern high plains. Much farther west, high winds whipped up blizzard conditions on the snow-capped peaks of Hawaii. Peoria, Ill., received 5.5 inches of snow. Temperatures were in the teens and single digits from the northern and central Plains to the upper Great Lakes.
