From Times wire services

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) said today that he believes the U.S. health care system is on the verge of collapse, based on his touring of the country.

“The situation is more acute than I imagined,” said Kennedy in interviews from Sparta, Ga., with the NBC “Today” show and ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“It really is on the verge of collapse in so many ways.”

Kennedy, chairman of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee, said the American people want Congress to take legislative action.
