BUENOS AIRES —
Argentina’s economic minister, Nestor Rapanelli, resigned today amid President Carlos Menem’s worst economic crisis to date.
Orlando Rerreres, a deputy economic minister, announced the resignation five days after Menem launched his second emergency economic plan, which included a 54% currency devaluation.
The government ordered banks closed today, after the U.S. dollar rose to over 1,500 australes Thursday on the free foreign currency exchange market.
