Japan’s two biggest auto makers, Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Corp., today reported substantial declines in their exports in November due primarily to sagging sales to the United States, their biggest market.

Toyota, the nation’s top auto maker, said exports plunged 17% from the previous year’s level to 123,834 units, the third consecutive month of a year-on-year decline.

Nissan reported a 19.4% drop in exports from a year ago to 76,822 units.

The companies, however, reported an increase in their domestic sales because of the nation’s healthy economy, with Toyota sales jumping 12.6% over year-ago levels to 234,405 units and Nissan’s rising 8.6% from a year ago to 113,452 units.
