About 160,000 workers staged a half-hour “warning” strike in the republic of Montenegro today to pressure the Communist government into adopting urgent measures to contain hyper-inflation.

The general strike coincided with a key session of Yugoslavia’s Parliament at which Premier Ante Markovic planned to unveil a sweeping market-oriented program to combat inflation, currently hovering around 2,000%.

The government has threatened to resign if the package is rejected during a three-day legislative session.

Tanjug news agency said “the last warning to the government” was staged in the underdeveloped republic because its policy has “brought a large part of Montenegro’s population to the edge of famine and social misery.”
