WORLD IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Union Delegation and Mandela Meet

Nelson R. Mandela wants to leave prison immediately but won’t beg for his freedom, said Syndey Mufamadi, one of five militant union officials who met with the black nationalist leader. Mandela, whose release is widely expected in the next few weeks, has been allowed to meet with anti-apartheid leaders. The six-hour meeting was Mandela’s first with a delegation from the Congress of South African Trade Unions.
