P.M. BRIEFING : China Loans Likely to Resume

The World Bank is likely to resume lending to China early next year, World Bank sources said today.

The bank suspended loans to China after Beijing’s bloody military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in June.

“The resumption of loans to China will likely be made at a very early stage of next year,” said one source.

A week ago bank President Barber Conable said the World Bank hoped to resume lending in the “not-too-distant future.”

The easing of the U.S. position on economic cooperation with China will make it easier for the World Bank to resume loans, the sources said.
