PG&E; Granted $433-Million Rate Increase: The California Public Utilities Commission granted Pacific Gas & Electric Co. a $433-million rate increase that will raise the typical residential customer’s monthly bill $4.36. A PUC spokeswoman said two-thirds of the increase resulted from higher costs PG&E; must pay for fuel to produce electricity. Many residential customers will pay a larger percentage increase than will commercial and industrial users because of a utility commission policy of shifting rates to reflect the actual costs of delivering power to different kinds of consumers.
