A Bolivian air force transport plane crashed in the Bolivian jungle, killing at least 23 of the 28 people on board, including two American women, the air force said Friday.

Angela Whilcheard and Janet Edmonsard were among the victims when the C-130 transport went down shortly after taking off from the town of Guayaramerin, 375 miles northeast of La Paz, on Thursday, officials said. The U.S. Embassy in La Paz had no further information about the two women and it was not known whether they were tourists or residents in the country.

Air force planes are commonly used to transport passengers in remote parts of the interior. The Hercules aircraft was bound for Santa Cruz in central Bolivia.

It was Bolivia’s worst plane accident since an Eastern Airlines jet crashed into Mt. Illimani outside La Paz in December of 1984, killing all 33 people aboard.

Two passengers who survived were listed in guarded condition and the two crew members were only slightly hurt, officials said.
