Controversy at Saddleback College Paper

I’m very much disappointed in The Times’ editorial (Dec. 14) on the Saddleback College student paper. Your editorial quoted the statement of the faculty adviser, Carol Ziehm, as reflecting yours and the proper view: “What we are talking about here is something precious--freedom of speech.”

I think it’s unfortunate that patriotic-sounding phrases are so often used to cloud and muddle the real issues. No one who disagrees with the paper’s views is attacking our First Amendment’s protection of freedom of speech.
