A flood of donations saved this community’s Salvation Army, which had been swamped by needy families and closed four days before Christmas.

Maj. Robert Pfeiffer, who runs the New Bedford office, said Friday that several thousand dollars had been donated by corporations and individuals after word of the closing spread. He said layoffs of 1,000 workers at various businesses led to about 300 additional needy families seeking help.
