Postal Official Among 200 Killed During Rebel Violence in Sri Lanka
Suspected left-wing rebels killed a postmistress and her parents and set fire to her post office in the central Kandy district a day after 200 people were killed in rebel violence in Sri Lanka’s southern Hambantota district, a government statement said Friday.
The rebels were also suspected of killing two other men and burning a transformer in Hambantota, residents said.
The government said the postmistress was the sister of a policeman working in Colombo.
Residents voiced fears that the attacks could trigger another killing spree in the district where bodies were found strung from trees and lamp posts and burning on car tires Thursday.
About 10,000 people have died in a two-year campaign by the front to oust the government.
