Pope John Paul II again appealed for peace in Lebanon in a Christmas message to the spiritual leader of the war-torn nation’s Maronite Christian community.

“May God prosper the efforts of all those . . . seeking a just solution to the grave problems which delay the return to normality greatly desired by all Lebanese,” the Pope said in a letter to Maronite Christian Patriarch Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir. The text was released by the Vatican on Sunday.
