WESTMINSTER : District to Buy 10 Portable Classrooms

Share

The Westminster School District is buying 10 portable classrooms to cope with an unexpected increase in students that has the district’s elementary schools filled to capacity.

The district’s enrollment increased by 440 students this fall over last year, and at least 250 more students are expected next year, said district Supt. William Lawson.

Lawson said that the district is weathering this year’s increase but that more space will be needed for next year.

The new classrooms will be placed in schools with the highest enrollment, he said. The schools being considered are Anderson and Eastwood elementary schools, Warner Middle School and Clegg-Stacey Elementary and Middle School.

“We haven’t decided where they’ll go yet because the longer we wait, the more accurate our enrollment figures will be,” Lawson said.

The board rejected an alternate plan to reopen one of five campuses that were closed because of declining enrollment. Those schools are now leased to private organizations.
