Merrill Lynch Is Top Corporate Underwriter: Merrill Lynch Capital Markets was ranked the top lead underwriter of corporate debt and equity issues, underwriting $45.4 billion in new domestic securities in 1989, according to Securities Data Co. Goldman, Sachs & Co. finished second, underwriting $41 billion. First Boston was third, with $37.7 billion, and Salomon Bros. finished fourth, with $32 billion. Goldman Sachs finished first when it came to underwriting municipal debt, however.
