From Times Staff and Wire Reports

NAACP officials said their office in Atlanta had received a racist letter identical to one sent to an Atlanta television station by a purported group claiming responsibility for recent deadly mail-bombings and threatening more assassinations. The group vowed to kill federal judges and civil rights activists “any time a black man rapes a white woman in Alabama, Florida or Georgia.” NAACP Executive Director Benjamin L. Hooks said his organization got the same letter sometime before it showed up at the TV station. FBI agents said the letter had the same identifying “code” as follow-up letters sent to some of the bomb targets.
