Israel on Monday imposed an indefinite curfew on 650,000 Arabs in the Gaza Strip, reinforcing troops there and in the West Bank to prevent demonstrations, the army said.

Palestinian leaders of a two-year revolt against Israeli rule in the occupied territories had called for celebrations Monday commemorating the founding in 1965 of Fatah, the mainstream Palestine Liberation Organization group headed by Yasser Arafat.

Journalists are barred from the Gaza Strip unless accompanied by an army escort, an army spokesman said.

The army also imposed curfews Sunday on the Hebron market and Ramallah in the West Bank.
