WORLD : Azerbaijan Protesters Retreat
Protesters in the republic of Azerbaijan began retreating from the Soviet-Iran border today after four days of violent attempts to reunite with their Iranian brethren, a protest organizer said.
“The situation is stabilizing. People are gradually going home,” said Yusif Samedoglu, a writer and leader of the Azerbaijani People’s Front, which organized the protest. He spoke by telephone from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The KGB rushed border troop reinforcements to the area Wednesday to stop protesters from demolishing guard towers and security alarms.
