THE SIDELINES : Sumo Officials Win: No Women

From Times wire services

Tradition won over women’s rights today as Japan’s chief government spokeswoman abandoned her challenge to an ancient taboo that bans women from entering the sumo ring.

The battle began in December when Chief Cabinet Secretary Mayumi Moriyama informed the Japan Sumo Assn. that she intended to present the Prime Minister’s Cup to the winner of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament from inside the ring.

But on Thursday, the head of the Sumo Assn. said the organization will not allow her to enter the ring because it “is sacred and we must preserve our traditions.” After the sumo officials stated their opposition, Moriyama decided not to push the issue further, Deputy Cabinet Secretary Hobuo Isihara told reporters today.

“Although her challenge didn’t work this time, things have changed, and I believe they will also change in the future,” said Ryoichi Maki, a secretary to Moriyama.
