A Virginia judge on Friday suspended about half of the $64 million in fines levied against the United Mine Workers for illegal strike activities at Pittston Coal Group mines in three states.

Russell County Judge Donald McGlothlin Jr. suspended $33 million of the fines imposed for activities such as blocking mine entrances and vandalism to vehicles crossing picket lines.

The union and Pittston want to eliminate all litigation before a proposed contract is sent to the rank and file for a ratification vote. Last Monday, both sides emerged from marathon negotiations with a proposed agreement to end the nine-month strike.
