Middle East and Domino Theory

Conspicuously missing from your editorial “The Risks of Reporting the News” (Dec. 28) is any reference to Israel. You mentioned the high death tolls in Peru, Sri Lanka, Iran, Brazil, El Salvador and Indonesia; yet, there was no mention of the loss of the lives of those reporters working in Israel.

In my attempt to correct your apparent oversight, I did some investigation on my own. What do you think I discovered? You were absolutely correct! Not only have there been absolutely no fatalities among media personnel during the last two years of the intifada , there is not one known case of a journalist killed in Israel during the entire 42 years of conflict between the Arabs and Israel.

I realize that, in more recent times, journalists have been refused access to some of the more heated areas, but judging from the figures you presented in other global communities, perhaps a word of thanks to the Israeli government by the families of Israeli-based reporters would be in order.
