Gas Prices Rise Sharply: Gasoline prices jumped dramatically and unseasonably with the beginning of the new year, shadowing a sharp rise in home heating oil costs brought on by a winter cold snap in much of the nation, industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said. The average price of a gallon of gasoline on Jan. 5 was $1.1095, up 4.5 cents from the Dec. 15 price of $1.0641, said Lundberg, who surveys prices at 12,000 stations nationwide.
