A Roman Catholic taxi driver was found shot to death Sunday, apparently in revenge for the killing of a Protestant taxi driver by the Irish Republican Army last week, police said.

Martin Byrne, 28, was found slumped across the front seat of his cab near the town of Lurgan, southwest of Belfast. He had been shot once in the head.

Police said they believe that the latest killing in Northern Ireland’s 2O-year conflict was in retaliation for the death in Belfast last Tuesday of a Protestant taxi driver in an IRA car-bomb explosion. The IRA is predominantly Catholic.

Byrne had no connection with the security forces or with any paramilitary organization, friends said.
