The first major group of U.S. combat troops will return from Panama today and will be welcomed home at a ceremony at Ft. Bragg, N.C., the 82nd Airborne Division announced Sunday.

The 700 soldiers of the 83rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Regiment were part of the 7th Infantry’s Atlantic Task Force.

U.S. troops have returned in small groups since the invasion, but this will be the first arrival of a major military unit that participated in the invasion, a Ft. Bragg spokesman said.

The battalion had been sent to Panama on Dec. 10, ahead of the invading forces, for special training at the U.S. Southern Command’s jungle operations training center.

Twenty-three soldiers were injured in the Panama fighting.
