East German track and field officials have recommended that discus thrower Wolfgang Schmidt be allowed to compete for West Germany, an East German newspaper reported today.

The move would allow Schmidt to participate at the European Track and Field Championships in Split, Yugoslavia, in August, the newspaper Deutsches Sportecho said.

Schmidt, still one of the top-ranked discus throwers in the world although he will be 36 next week, was dropped from the East German national team in 1981 and jailed in 1982 after stating his wish to move to West Germany.

The newspaper said the recommendation to the East German sports authorities was made by a track and field commission that included Olympic champions Juergen Schult, a discuss thrower, and Ulf Timmermann and Udo Beyer, both shot putters.
