NATION : Bush Welcomes Portugal Leader
President Bush welcomed Portugal’s Prime Minister Anibal Cavaco Silva “as an old friend” today as they began talks expected to focus on ways to help end fighting in Angola and get peace talks resumed.
“We have a distinguished guest here, an old friend of mine who I am delighted to see,” Bush commented. They were joined by Secretary of State James A. Baker III and Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser.
The impasse in talks between the Soviet-backed government supported by Portugal and the UNITA rebels armed by the United States was expected to be a significant part of discussions at the White House today between Bush and Cavaco Silva.
