The women’s World Cup super giant slalom, scheduled for Tuesday, was canceled today due to hazardous conditions.

The race was to have been part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Hanenkamm downhill and would have been the first time since 1961 that women raced at Kitzbuhel.

Race director Toni Sailer, upset at the decision, said the race was canceled on a 3-2 jury vote, but he gave no reason.

However, an International Ski Federation technical delegate, Evi Mittermaier, indicated that the race was canceled because of hazardous course conditions.

Sailer said the course was cleared by the ski federation last summer. “They knew then that part of the course was narrower than the required 30 meters, and I find it impossible to accept that it could be canceled at this late stage after all the work we have done.”
