Banning Sales of Ammunition

Share

Your article (Part B, Jan. 10) on the Los Angeles City Council effort to institute a ban on ammunition sales prior to certain holidays shows the depth of thinking that goes into such proposals.

It is absurd to think that the free enterprise system would not respond to such a ban by holding “ammunition sales” the week before the ban took effect to bolster sales. To say that all who purchase ammunition at such times intend to shoot it into the air is also far-fetched. Why not just require that sellers of ammunition during the designated period give purchasers a flyer advising them of laws and penalties so that they will be less likely to engage in such activity?

Persons shooting into the air are already violating numerous laws; the last thing we need is one more. They also face confiscation of their firearms and ammunition. Only education can help solve this problem combined with strict enforcement of existing laws.
