Ari Vatanen of Finland led a Peugeot sweep, winning the Paris-Dakar rally for the third time. Vatanen beat Swedish teammate Bjorn Waldegaard by more than an hour in the final overall standings. Alain Ambrosino of France finished third.

Edi Orioli of Italy won the motorcycle division for the second time.
