From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Nicaragua’s main opposition alliance threatened to withdraw from the Feb. 25 general elections unless the nation’s Central Bank immediately release hundreds of thousands of dollars in U.S. aid, a Sandinista official said. President Daniel Ortega, in a display of flexibility, had ordered the bank to pay out $600,000 last Monday even though bank procedures had not been complied with, according to Sandinista campaign manager Bayardo Arce. Officials of the National Opposition Union had accused the government of deliberately holding up the money. Opposition spokesmen were not immediately available for comment.
