7,000 Cheer Opposition in Defiance of Mongolia’s Ban on Demonstrations
Thousands of Mongolians defied a government ban on demonstrations Sunday and massed in a central Ulan Bator square to demand human rights, freedom and sweeping political changes.
About 7,000 demonstrators, braving extreme cold, crowded around a rostrum in the center of Sukhbator Square to cheer leaders of an opposition group as they made anti-government speeches.
“The prime minister and the deputy prime minister are responsible for the terrible state of affairs,” the leader of the dissident group declared.
It is the fourth time protesters have flocked to the square since early December. But it was the first action in direct defiance of the government, which banned some demonstrations last week.
