The eighth stage of Monday’s Monte Carlo automobile rally was canceled after French driver Francis Malaussene was killed and co-driver Jean-Claude Bertaudiere was seriously injured in an accident.

Race officials said Malaussene died on impact after his R5 GT Turbo spun out of control and slid 650 feet into a ravine four miles from the finish line.
