Ecstatic Pakistanis danced in the streets today after Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto became the world’s first modern head of government to give birth while in office.

“It is a day of celebrations,” said Munawwar Suhrawardy, Bhutto’s personal security guard, as he handed out candy--a traditional gesture of celebration--after Bhutto, 36, delivered a baby girl by Cesarean section.

“The baby and her mother are fine,” a spokeswoman for Lady Dufferin Women’s Hospital in Karachi said.

The baby, who has not yet been named, weighed about 7 1/2 pounds, according to a hospital source. Bhutto’s first child, her son Bilawal, was also born by Cesarean section.

As news of the birth spread through Pakistan’s largest city, Bhutto’s political supporters poured onto the streets with flutes, bugles and drums to dance in celebration.
