The University of Georgia’s University Council defeated a resolution calling for an in-depth study of the academic performance of the school’s athletes.

The vote Thursday was 55 to 51 against the resolution.

The study would have focused on football and male basketball players since 1975 and would have included information on graduation rates, academic problems and employment records for all scholarship athletes in the two programs. It was proposed because of a recent U.S. News and World Report article that used Georgia’s 1980 national champion football team as an example of the problems plaguing intercollegiate athletics.

Some members of the University Council, which is made up of faculty, administrators and students, said the panel may consider a revised proposal next month that would call for an investigation of all Georgia athletic programs. The main arguments against Thursday’s resolution were that it focused only on two programs and would not provide a complete picture.
