Lectures to Go Along With Concerts

Conductor Frans Brueggen and Metropolitan Opera baritone Thomas Hampson will be among those offering a series of lectures in conjunction with concerts being sponsored by the Orange County Philharmonic Society at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The lectures will be given at the nearby Westin South Coast Plaza hotel.

The series:

Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m.: Maryann Bonino, musicologist and director of the Los Angeles-based Da Camera Society, will speak on Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto and Liszt’s “A Faust Symphony,” to be performed that evening by the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle.

March 25, 1:30 p.m.: Brueggen, recorder player and guest conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, will discuss works by Muffat, Rameau and Handel to be played by the orchestra that afternoon.

March 31, 6:30 p.m.: Stephen Hartke, composer-in-residence with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, will talk on Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, Lutoslawski’s “Chain 2,” and William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3, to be played that evening by the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

April 17, 6:30 p.m.: flutist Susan Stockhammer will discuss chamber works by Mozart, Beethoven and Reicha to be played that evening by flutist James Galway and the Tokyo String Quartet.

April 25, 6:30 p.m.: Hampson and pianist Armen Guzelimian will look back at their recital of the previous evening to discuss the working relationship between singer and accompanist.

May 6, 1:30 p.m.: James Hanshumaker, USC professor of music, will talk about Scriabin’s Symphony No. 3 and Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra,” to be played that afternoon by the Radio Symphony of West Berlin led by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
