WORLD IN BRIEF : EAST GERMANY : Communist Foes Propose Coalition

Opposition groups agreed to join the beleaguered Communist government if East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow and his Cabinet agree to deactivate their party memberships until the May 6 elections. Modrow indicated that he is willing to discuss the proposal at negotiations scheduled for Monday. The proposal came from an all-day meeting in East Berlin of more than a dozen opposition groups after a party allied with the Communists threatened to pull out of the government.
