Chargers Dismiss Line Coach

Larry Beightol has been dismissed as Charger offensive line coach, General Manager Bobby Beathard said Friday. The preferred candidate as a successor is Alex Gibbs of the Raiders, Beathard said.

Beathard said Gibbs, the last Raider holdover from the staff of fired Coach Mike Shanahan, is considering other NFL offers. He said he hopes to have a decision from Gibbs by early next week.

Beathard said it was his decision to dismiss Beightol and pursue Gibbs. Coach Dan Henning said earlier in the week that he wanted to retain Beightol, who was hired away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by Henning last February.

Beightol, 47, worked with Henning for two seasons when Henning was coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Beathard said that Beightol would not be given a new assignment with the team.
